A Columbia County Circuit judge has sentenced a Portage man to nine months in jail for killing his dog with a hammer. The dog belonged to 31-year-old Brandon Shearer’s girlfriend. Deputies say Shearer admitted hitting the dog in the head with a roofing hammer several times last March. Shearer entered a no-contest plea to a charge of animal mistreatment last May.
