Today is the day we as a nation remember those who served our country but never made it home. Prisoners of War/Missing in Action or POW/MIA Recognition Day was created in 1979 to ensure that America remembers to stand behind those who serve and to make sure we do everything we can to account for those who have never returned. According to a Congressional Research Service Report, over 137,000 service members were taken into captivity since World War II, and over 83,000 Americans went missing. The black flag that is commonly used to support POW/MIA, was actually created in 1971 by WWII pilot Newt Heinsley, and has been flown underneath the Stars and Stripes at the White House every POW/MIA Recognition Day.
