Silver Lake College is no more. As of yesterday, the college, which was founded by the Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity, is now known by its original name, Holy Family College. HFC President, Dr. Robert Callahan, with the HFC Jazz Ensemble in the background, explained to SeehaferNews.com why they made the change. “First and foremost, we needed to put a stake in the ground and really show people how our college is distinctive and unique from all the many college choices out there,” he explained. “For those that know us, this will signify that we are returning to our roots…and for those who don’t know us yet, this will show them that moving forward, our future is all about faith, family, and academic excellence.”
The name is a bit of a double-edged sword. As Dr. Callahan mentioned, they are returning to their original name, but the name also works on another level. He said that in a Twitter world, we “have about 10 seconds to tell our story. I can’t think of three stronger words to start telling that story for our college than Holy, Family, College.”
This new chapter in the College’s history is also the first stepping stone to a broader goal, of attracting more students to the Lakeshore. Dr. Callahan told us that they currently have around 450 students enrolled at HFC, but have a goal of having 3,000 students on the books. On top of the new name, the athletic teams received a new logo as well. The new logos are a modern twist to the school’s traditional mascot, Freddy the pheasant. Dr. Callahan says that the college is aiming to triple its number of student-athletes.
