Chilton High School’s one-of-a-kind 1969 Football season was celebrated recently with a reunion. A longtime friend of the Lakeshore Hall of Fame, Craig Hoffman, writes for the Tri-County News in Kiel and he shared some information about that 8-0 record team of 50-years ago. Hoffman tells SeehaferNews.com they had NFL Hall of Famer Dave Casper, who played just 1 year of high school football in Chilton. The Casper’s moved from suburban Chicago after his Dad bought a gas station in the Chilton area. Hoffman told us that Casper was more known for his defense, but was still All Conference Linebacker and Tight End. His all state honors came in the form of a second team nod for is defensive roll.
Hoffman said some of Dave’s teammates heard rumors that Casper was transferring to Chilton, and o n the first day of practice, “Niel Nelson…let the kids out of the high school onto the field…and here’s this kid punting the football…over the lights. The guys were just amazed. Nelson turned around and said ‘Guys, thanks Dave Casper, your new teammate.”
Craig explains the ’69 season was just amazing with no points allowed and 363 points in the scoring column. He shared some other amazing stats, including the fact that only four teams crossed midfield against the defensive powerhouse. The closest team to scoring on them was Sun Prairie, who made it to the 10 yard line, but the D held strong, and Chilton won that game 7-0.
Chilton was one of only 3 football teams in Wisconsin High School football history to go unbeaten and unscored upon in a season. Team-members and coaches were honored at halftime of a Tigers home game, Labor Day weekend.
