The Vietnam Veterans of America are getting ready to present The Wall That Heals at the Manitowoc County Expo grounds this coming week. The monument is a three quarters sized replica of the Vietnam War Memorial Wall in Washington DC and will be on display from September 12th through the 15th. We spoke with the VVA Manitowoc Chapter President Terry Johnson, and he explained that the idea to bring the wall to Manitowoc came after he and several other members saw it in Crivitz last year. The group then brought it up at a meeting and the Chapter agreed.
Fundraising to cover the cost of bringing the wall here was done entirely by the use of flyers, which were mailed out, and got a great response. “For a while it was slow, and now it picked up again, so we are well covered for financing,” Johnson told SeehaferNews.com. “It costs a lot to get here.” He also thanked the many businesses that offered golf carts, and water among other things.
Johnson did tell us that they are in need of volunteers. If you want to volunteer, you can do so at the United Way of Manitowoc County Website, at VetsOfAmerica.org, or by calling Marv Decker at 970-6945. The wall stands at 75 feet long and has etched into it the names of the over 58,000 servicemen and woman that gave their lives during the Vietnam War. The wall will be escorted from Two Rivers to Manitowoc on Tuesday beginning at the Armory at 4:00 p.m.
