A Manitowoc native and Lutheran High School graduate is back home in the lakeshore area this week waiting out the hurricane along the southeastern U.S. Mike Lorenz, his wife Courtney & their 3 young children are staying with Mike’s parents in Manitowoc, after an evacuation order for Hurricane Dorian in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. Lorenz tells SeehaferNews.com that it looked like Dorian was going to hit his home on Hilton Head Island, so they decided to take a “Hurricane Vacation” in Wisconsin.
Mike is a former Wisconsin Badger football player and competed in 4 bowl games, before graduating from UW in 2004 with a degree in History. He later spent time in an NFL training camp with the New England Patriots and after being released, Lorenz went back to school & attained a teaching certification and two Masters’ degrees in technology education and leadership & education. He’s an assistant principal at Hilton Head Island High School and being grateful for ‘his’ start with the Chiefs before his glory days with the Lancers & Badgers, he spoke yesterday to youth football players at the Manitowoc Chiefs clubhouse. His message? “You have dreams. You have goals. Go for them.” He advised the children to have a small goal along the way as well.
Lorenz also encouraged his young audience to compete in multiple sports, not just focus on one extracurricular activity. “College football coaches aren’t looking for football players, they are looking for athletes,” he explained. “The college guys will take an athlete and make you into what they want you to be, so enjoy sports now.”
Mike and his family plan to return home to South Carolina on Saturday.
