New York Yankees great Lou Gehrig brought worldwide attention to Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis in 1939, when he abruptly retired after his A-L-S diagnosis. While much has been learned about the motor neuron disease since then, a cure remains elusive.
Next Saturday, August 24th the ManitoWALK vs A-L-S will be held at Timeout Sports Bar & Grill. Local coordinator Tina Kocourek tells Seehafer News, “All the money we raise goes to the ALS Wisconsin Chapter in Milwaukee to help caregivers, to help people battling ALS with equipment and things that they need, and to research to find a cure.”
Kocourek says this cause is near-and-dear to her heart. “My mom ended up with ALS seven years ago. She passed away a year ago. She battled it on a ventilator, unable to move.” It was in honor of her mother’s battle, that Kocourek decided to help organize this fundraising event. Tina says they’ve raised over $130,000 in a 5 year period, which brings the added bonus of the ALS association partnering with the organization.
The event will include a 3-mile walk, both silent and live auctions as well as music by Four Shades of Grey. Kocourek says people can register the day of the ManitoWALK VS. A-L-S event with check-in beginning at 9:00 am, followed by the walk itself at 10 o’clock.
