The Manitowoc Police Department has been busy this summer dealing with multiple Scams trying to bilk people out of their hard-earned money. Chief Nick Reimer says don’t open an envelope you receive in the mail inviting you to cash a check immediately. “If you never mailed anything in and weren’t expecting anything…it’s going to be a scam.”
Crime SGT. Andrew Trilling elaborated, explaining that “People don’t just send random checks in the mail. You probably aren’t winning the lottery just by random…We encourage people to just be conscious of that.”
Trilling adds that these checks look so much like the real deal that banks have a difficult time determining their authenticity. Chief Reimer says another scam perpetrators use is the so-called grandparent scam. The basic idea of the scam is that someone will call claiming your child or grandchild is in jail or in the hospital and will ask for money, or gift cards. Chief Reimer advises that if you do get such a call, you should hang up immediately. Law enforcement emphasizes that if it’s legitimate they’ll call back.
SGT. Trilling will be hosting a pair of Scam Presentations October 8th at the Manitowoc Senior Center and October 9th at Felician Village. For more information call 686-6576.
