Manitowoc County Sheriff Dan Hartwig
It’s been a busy month of August for the Manitowoc County Metro Drug Unit. Sheriff Dan Hartwig during an appearance on 1240 AM WOMT’S Be My Guest program earlier this week, praised those specialized officers who investigate local drug cases, saying “Our drug unit has been absolutely outstanding…Dave Remiker, our drug commander, is doing a phenomenal job.”
Hartwig says investigators have recovered some major amounts of methamphetamines, in recent weeks. He explained that the Metro Drug Unit has seized about 45 lbs. of meth off the street in the past couple of months. “That is almost unheard of,” the Sheriff exclaimed. “…but if we are seizing 45 lbs., there’s a lot out there yet.”
Hartwig also spoke about what meth does to people, recalling a series of mug shots for one recently arrested drug user. He said the photos show the transition from a beautiful young girl, into someone you would see on a “faces of meth” poster. “It’s very disturbing and very sad at the same time.”
Sheriff Hartwig says to call your nearest law enforcement agency if you see any suspicious people or activity. He adds, “it’s not just a law enforcement issue…it’s a community issue too.”
