The owner of Hartman’s Towne and Country Greenhouse in Manitowoc said, “this has been a pretty herky-jerky season so far, but with our July weather, we’re getting caught up.” Tom Hartman says every growing season is different but admits this is one of the toughest we’ve seen in a while.
“I feel for the farmers out there because they are the ones that couldn’t get out in the field to get things planted and they’re suffering because of that. I’ve seen some corn that is only a couple of inches high, but that’s the season we’ve been in.”
Hartman pointed out that fertilizing your plants is “very important” in late July.
“You’re watering, especially now, very frequently and you bleached out whatever fertilizer was in that soil. You need to continue to keep adding and the easiest way to do that is to get some water-soluble type fertilizer. We like Jack’s and Miracle-Gro also works well. Follow the label directions and do this on a weekly basis, you’ll notice a big difference in how your flowers and plants look out there.”
He added it may not be convenient, but you really need to fertilize your plants to have them looking good well into the fall season.
On a personal note, the gardening expert said he picked his 1st cherry tomato of the season on thursday.
