Manitowoc County Executive Bob Ziegelbauer is very pleased with the County Board’s failure to override his veto of a proposal to question Attorney General Josh Kahl about their half percent sales tax proposal. The board voted 15-9 in favor of the override, but they needed 17 votes to pass it. Ziegelbauer saw this vote as a test vote on the actual tax. “I have 9 votes fighting the sales tax,” he proclaimed. “I don’t know what their next step is but I’m pleased that the veto was sustained.”
The County Executive did not like the tactics being used by those supporting the tax however. He told SeehaferNews.com that they were basically shopping around, trying to “get permission” to implement their proposal. The sustained veto means that this tactic will “be suspended for now.”
The proposal was going to use the money gained to help address road repairs and maintenance in the county, but Ziegelbauer said he has a plan for that. He said that there is an “aggressive plan” in the county budget. Therefore, according to Ziegelbauer, we don’t need the tax.
