The Manitowoc County Board voted last night in an attempt to override County Executive Bob Ziegelbauer’s veto of their request to question State Attorney General Josh Kahl about their proposed half percent sales tax increase. While the final vote tallied in at 15-9 in favor of the override, they needed 17 votes to pass. We asked County Board Chairman Jim Brey what’s next for the sales tax, to which he responded by saying “I think as of right now, the sales tax conversation is all but dead.” He did imply that the Ad Hoc Committee could meet again, but at least for now nothing more will likely happen.
Brey admitted to SeehaferNews.com that he is a bit disappointed, because “…last night’s vote wasn’t a vote on the sales tax itself, it was just to ask for an opinion.” Brey went on to say “While I respect the supervisors that voted against it because they are against the sales tax…we should have asked for the opinion regardless.”
We asked Brey if the County Board would readdress the tax at any point, and he said that they would have to wait until a new County Executive was elected, because Bob Ziegelbauer has made it very clear that he would never approve the sales tax increase.
