Former University of Wisconsin women’s soccer player Rose Lavelle is credited with making the best play of the first half Tuesday as the U-S defeated England 2-1 in the World Cup semifinals. That win qualifies the Americans to play for the title Sunday against the winner of the Sweden-Netherlands match. The U-S scored all of its goals in the first half, dominating the action by taking nine shots to just three for England. Lavelle took four of the shots, one after what is called a “nutmeg” tap between a defender’s legs.
