Manitowoc County Executive Bob Ziegelbauer announced this morning that he will veto the resolution passed by the County Board last Tuesday asking for State Attorney General Josh Kaul’s legal opinion on the county sales tax proposal. The resolution passed 15 to 7 with 2 board members absent, calls for the proposed tax revenue to be split 70 percent for municipalities and 30 percent for road infrastructure. There’s no money allocated for school districts which previous opinions from County Corporation Counsel and the State Legislative Council deems the proposed tax illegal. County Board Chairman Jim Brey counters that neighboring Sheboygan County’s Half-percent tax, which has been in effect for more than a year, does not allocate funding for school districts. It would take a two-thirds vote from the County Board to override Ziegelbauer’s veto.
