The Manitowoc County Sheriff’s K-9 fund is running low. It began some 30 years ago under Sheriff Tom Kocourek through a generous donation from a local citizen. However, current Sheriff Dan Hartwig tells SeehaferNews.com that the costs of operation are starting to outweigh the interest in the account. “We are going to be seeking donations from the public,” Hartwig explained, “because we have a lot of things that are not covered in our budget.” Hartwig elaborated saying “If you’re getting a dog, they’re usually about 2 years old and to get them trained and for the purchase of the dog, you’re right around $14-$15,000.”
The Sheriff explained that they have been very lucky with their previous K9s who have worked between 7 and 9 years. A K-9 Officer is due to retire soon and according to the Sheriff “you can’t duplicate the skills and value of what these officers bring to the Department.”
The Department has a few ideas for how they can raise money for the program, including selling stuffed animals with the current K9 officer’s names on them. The initial goal is $100,000 with expectations to raise more.
