Deer kills along our highways are becoming more prevalent this time of year. During an appearance on 1240 AM WOMT’s Be My Guest Program, Manitowoc County Sheriff Dan Hartwig had some advice for motorists. Hartwig instructed motorists that come across a deer that has been struck to call the Sheriff’s Department’s Non-Emergency line, at 920-683-4200. Explain to them where you are, and what condition the deer is in, so they can properly take care of it.
If you find a deer carcass along the roadway Hartwig says that they will take care of that too. “We have a contractor that comes out which is given out by our dispatch and they will come and pick up the deer for us,” the Sheriff explained.
Hartwig also informed us that with a very wet Spring, high grass in the ditches along the highway “make it more difficult for drivers” to see the movement of deer.
