Several communities have implemented a so-called Wheel Tax, which would require those living in those municipalities to pay an extra fee each time you register your car, but a new Assembly Bill could change that for some places. Assembly Bill 283, which was co-sponsored by State Senator Andre Jacque of De Pere would require local governments to impose a referendum asking the community if they would want the wheel tax before they can impose it. As for places that already have the tax in place, such as Appleton and Manitowoc, would also have to hold a referendum. Representative Shae Sortwell of Two Rivers says that this is an important bill because, “The more power we can put directly in the hands of the people, I think that calls for good government, whether it’s at the state level or local level.” Appleton Mayor Tim Hanna bluntly disagreed saying, “Get your nose out of our business, and clean up your own house.”
