Farmers are being forced to continue to wait to get their crops planted due to heavy rain followed by short drying times. Crop consultant Shawn Eckstein is very worried about the problem, saying “We are about 10 days away from disaster.” He went on to say that corn will have to be in the ground very soon, or it will not be ready in time to be harvested for silage, simply known as feed for their livestock.
Eckstein also explained that farmers need at least five dry days in order for the fields to be ready to plant, but some people will not be able to even plant anything. While those farmers will be able to collect crop insurance, they will still need to find another way to feed their animals, which will be difficult as not many people have been able to plant. To make matters worse, we are expected to get rain all week, according to the Weatherology forecast.
Things may be looking quite dire for farmers right now, but Eckstein is keeping a positive attitude, saying “Farmers are resilient. They always seem to manage somehow.”
