The Manitowoc County Ad Hoc Sales Tax Committee will meet at 4:15 this afternoon to discuss and possibly take-action on a resolution that would ask State Attorney General, Josh Kaul his opinion on whether the proposed half-percent sales tax ordinance is legal. Committee member and Manitowoc County Board Chair Jim Brey says the proposed ordinance has the County’s 30 municipalities receiving an undisclosed share of approximately $1.5 to $1.7 million of an anticipated $5.3 million that the tax would raise annually. The remaining money would be kept by the County and absorbed into the Highway Department budget to be used exclusively for road development and repair. The main topic in question is that it does not contain disbursement of funds to school districts, which some say make the proposed ordinance illegal. Brey questions that saying Corporation Counsel in Sheboygan County deemed their half-percent sales tax legal and none of that money is dispersed to school districts there. If action is taken and passed it’ll move on to the full Board for its consideration at their next regularly scheduled meeting June 18th.
