The Wisconsin State Patrol says its troopers were trying to contact a kidnapping suspect who was thought to be in a vehicle on Interstate 39 when it crashed Monday morning. Two people died when that vehicle slammed into the back of a semi-trailer near Portage. One of them had been suspected of being a part of an attempted kidnapping. Authorities say the fleeing vehicle reached speeds topping 100 miles an hour just before the double-fatal accident. The attempted kidnapping took place in the area near Schofield, but details haven’t been released.
