The Wisconsin Maritime Museum in downtown Manitowoc has opened a new temporary exhibit in their Riverside gallery. Interim director and chief curator, Cathy Green, tells SeehaferNews.com that it’s about commercial fishing. “A local photographer, Jim Legault has been photographing folks in the fisheries for over 30 years,” Green explained. “His photographs will cover from the 1970’s to today, and will chronicle the changes that have been happening.”
Green explains that it’s an exhibit they’ve wanted to do for a while. “The photographs themselves can really show you a change in the fisheries in the Lake.” She also told us that Legault followed some of the same families around during that time, so “In the early photographs, where the kids have now, in the recent photographs, have turned into the adults running the boats.”
Cathy Green added, that commercial fishing is a Great Lakes & Wisconsin tradition and an important part of the story they tell at the museum. The exhibit was unveiled last night during the Wisconsin Maritime Museum’s annual meeting and will be open daily for visitors to see through this summer. Meanwhile, Green told us they started the diesel engines on the World War II submarine, Cobia, for the first time this season on Wednesday. The U.S.S. Cobia is open for daily tours.
