Denver comic Adam Cayton-Holland is blowing up in all media. With his upcoming trip to headline the 2nd Annual Great Spirit Comedy Festival in Manitowoc on April 12 and 13, he’s got two things on his mind: Stand-up and Bird Watching.
“I’m a big baseball fan and a bird watcher, so I’m already 85 years old,” admits the
Creator and star of TruTV’s cult series Those Who Can’t. The comedian, who is actually 38, is enjoying success with the third season of his show, on stage as a stand-up, and as author of a New York Times bestseller ‘Tragedy Plus Time.’
Cayton-Holland was named one of 25 “Comics to Watch” by Esquire magazine and one of “10 Comics to Watch” by Variety, and has enjoyed great success with fellow Coloradans Ben Roy and Andrew Overdahl in their comedy troupe, The Growlix. (A “Growlix” is the name for the cartoon swear word written as “*%&#!” “It’s perfectly obscure and pretentious, just like us,” jokes Cayton-Holland.
The three first gained attention in a series of sketches launched on Funny or Die. This led to Those Who Can’t, a comedy series set in a fictional Denver high school where “the teachers are worse than the students.” Cayton-Holland, Roy, and Overdahl play outlandish educators alongside co-star Maria Thayer and a host of heavyweight comedy guest stars such as T.J. Miller and Patten Oswalt.
Touring as a stand-up comedian remains a major focus of Cayton-Holland, who has performed at the Montreal Just For Laughs, SXSW, High Plains Comedy Festival and Bridgetown Comedy festivals, as well as The Kennedy Center and Carnegie Hall. Next weekend he’ll add Manitowoc’s Great Spirit Comedy Festival to the list. Stand-up is in some ways “the most satisfying” form of comedy writing, he admits, because “you get that feedback immediately.”
He’s looking forward to coming to Northeastern Wisconsin this week, and even spending some time doing some birding. “That is right up my alley,” he says when talking about the potential to visit Woodland Dunes Nature Preserve while he’s here.
The Great Spirit Comedy Festival takes place April 12th and 13th at 810 Chicago Street in Downtown Manitowoc.
