
On Sunday, March 3rd, the Special Olympics Team District Basketball tournament was held at Sheboygan South. Several teams from Manitowoc County participated and had a blast doing so.
The Manitowoc Co Miracles “Kings” basketball team participated. Coach Corey Bjarnarson along with Kurk Beasley & Debby Bjarnarson coached this eight-person team. Game one was against the VPI Blazing Stars, which was won by the Kings with a final score of 25-18. Aiden Wollershiem was leading scorer with 19 points, Preston Bjarnarson had 5 points & Tim Cooley had 1 point. With a win in game one, that put the Kings in the Championship game against the SideKick II. The Kings had played the SideKick II back in January of this year in Two Rivers. The Kings won the previous meeting in great close game 20-18. So it was set up for a great Championship game. The game started with Preston Bjarnarson making the first 5 points for Kings in the first quarter. With a 3 pointer late in 2nd quarter by SideKick II, the score was 11-7 Kings lead at half. With SideKick II only score 2 points in 3rd quarter and Kings scoring 6 points. The Kings now had 8 point lead with score of 17-9 after 3 quarters. Now the Kings only scored 2 points in 4th quarter and SideKick II scoring 6 points. Giving us final score 19-15 win for Kings. Giving the King the 1st place in Division and moving on to Sectionals in Stevens Point on March 17th. The leading scorer was Preston Bjarnarson with 11 points, Aiden Wollershiem & Greg Leslie with 2 points. This was the first time in Kings team history to win both games at District tournament.
The Manitowoc County Miracles Dragons played Door County 3 and were defeated 38 to 30. Top scorers for the Dragons were Mitch Finnel and Jeff Morgan with eight points each. Other scorers included Nicholas Bjarnarson and Charlotte Mason with four points each. Philip Einertson, Autumn Bateman and Scott Wells each had two points. The second game the Dragons lost 23 to 18 to the Green Bay Metro Dragons. The top scorers were David Johnson and Jeff Morgan with six points each. Scott Wells scored four points and Koua Thao scored two points each.
The Manitowoc County Miracles Comets basketball team won both games at the district competition in Sheboygan Sunday, March 3rd, advancing them to the sectional tournament in Stevens Point March 17th. They defeated the Sybil Hopp Timber Wolves 28-10 the first game, with Mike Pribek leading scorers with 12 points, followed by Marsha Schwoerer with 8, and Mark Pribek and Maggie Remiker each with 4. The second game they won 23-19 against the Fox Valley SOAR Falcons. Mike Pribek and Mark Pribek led the scoring with 8 points each, followed by 2 each from Sara Bensfield, Marsha Schwoerer and Oliver Schultz, and 1 point from Maggie Remiker.
The Manitowoc County Miracle Rebels took part in the team basketball District tournament Sunday, March 3. In game #1 the Rebels took on the Door County Clippers winning a hard-fought battle 35 – 30. Leading the Rebels was Dakota Wellner with 24 points, Travis Boettcher with 9 and Minoka Webster-Veleke with 2. In game #2 the Rebels took on Sybil Hopp Jaguars winning the game 32 – 25 in overtime. Leading the Rebels was Wellner with 14, Boettcher with 12, Shawn Schwoerer with 4 and Webster-Veleke 2. With the win, the Rebels earned a 1st place finish and advanced to the sectional tournament in Stevens Point.
