Update: The primary ice dam that caused flooding on the Sheboygan River has broken apart from the railroad bridge just east of S. Taylor Dr. This has allowed floodwaters in the area of S. Taylor Dr. and Indiana Ave. to flow downstream. A buildup of broken ice in the river behind Julson Ct. has caused water to flood the areas between New Jersey Ave. and the Sheboygan River between S. 18th St. and Wildwood Ave.
There have been no evacuations in this area. This area is primarily industrial, and facilities are able to exit as needed.
Floodwaters around S. Taylor Dr. and New Jersey Ave. have subsided. Both S. Taylor Dr. and Indiana Ave. are open to traffic. Traffic barricades will remain in place on Indiana Ave. as a precaution should the water rise again.
University Drive between S. Taylor Dr. and Lutheran High School remains closed until surrounding floodwaters subside.
New Jersey Ave. (and the surrounding side streets) remains closed between S. 17th St and Wildwood Ave.
Kiwanis Park Dr. south of 17th St. and Kiwanis Park Rd. remains closed due to an embankment failure.
The shifting nature of moving ice dams makes predicting the behavior of the river difficult. Citizens are reminded not to drive into standing water. Please plan alternative routes that do not take you into flooded areas or areas within these risk areas.
The Sheboygan Police Department has announced that New Jersey Avenue from South 22nd Street to South 17th Street will be closed immediately until further notice due to high water and flooding. The police department will be providing updates as they become available. There will be no through traffic between the closure points. South 17th Street from Kiwanis Park Drive to New Jersey Avenue is also closed.
Ice dams at at least 2 different locations have cause flooding issues along low lying areas of the Sheboygan River. Several roads in the flooded area have been closed.
Roads are closed at
1. Indiana Ave/County Hwy PP between S 25th St. and County Hwy A. This includes the intersection of S. Taylor Drive and Indiana Ave.
1. New Jersey Avenue between Taylor Frontage Rd. and S. 17th St.
2. Kiwanis Park Dr. between S. 17th St. and Kiwanis Park Rd.
Truck traffic accessing Taylor Drive locations north of the Sheboygan River should use Hwy 23 to access the areas of the City. Truck traffic accessing Taylor Drive locations south of the Sheboygan River should use State HWY 28 exits.
For those drivers coming into Sheboygan on County Hwy PP from Kohler, please detour north to Highway 23 or south to Hwy 28.
For those drivers moving north and south on Taylor Dr., traffic will be detoured into the city onto the 14th Street corridor. For those coming into the city, please plan alternate routes that avoid the S. Taylor Drive and Indiana Ave. areas. Detours are being determined.
The Department of Public Works continues to monitor the flooding and will update residents as changes in water levels allow for changes in access to these areas.
Drivers should always be cautious and avoid driving into standing water.
