Explosion And Fire Leaves Madeline Island Without Fire Protection

Authorities are investigating the cause of an explosion and fire at the building housing the only fire station and ambulance service on Madeline Island.  No one was injured in Wednesday’s early morning blast.  The Town of La Pointe will depend on Bayfield, Red Cliff and Washburn firefighters for any emergencies.  They can reach the island over an ice road right now.  The town board declared a state of emergency so it can buy the replacement equipment needed by the 38 emergency responders based on the island.
