Scammers targeted the wrong guy yesterday, when they left a message on Manitowoc County Sheriff Dan Hartwig’s cell phone. The Sheriff’s Office posted a picture of the transcribed voicemail on their Facebook page, where the scammers claim that there is a “suspension notice” on Hartwig’s social security number. In the post, the Sheriff’s Office says “We would like to let the public know that the IRS will not call you indicating your social security number is under investigation. Under no circumstances provide any of your personal or personal identifying information.” They also shared the following link to the official IRS website, where they warn of such scams, and how to detect them.
