On Wednesday, March 6th, Manitowoc Lincoln will host its first annual powderbuff volleyball tournament. The games are a spin-off of the powderpuff football game, which is traditionally part of homecoming week and involves high school girls playing football against one another after being coached by the Varsity football players. This week, the boys will be the ones playing (volleyball this time), and the varsity girls volleyball team are serving as their coaches. The idea for the tournament was put together by 3 junior students at Lincoln-Amaya Salek, Maggie Meyer, and Jadyn Georgenson- who are involved in National Honor Society. The girls are raising funds in order to buy fleece to make tie blankets for pediatric patients at the Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin. Amaya noted that the girls know a lot of families in the community who have been helped by the Children’s Hospital and they wanted to find a way to help give back. The tournament consists of 8 teams and begins at 6:30 p.m. The girls are asking for a monetary donation or a donation of fleece to get in. In addition to the money they have raised from the participating teams and will raise from admission, the students have also partnered with local businesses. The girls have received generous donations from Craft Inc and Kaysun Corporation. Additionally, Planet Fitness, Starbucks, and Kwik Trip have donated items that will be raffled off in a gift basket. Amaya, Maggie, and Jadyn all love kids and are thinking about entering the nursing field. The student body is excited about this new tradition of what promises to be a fun night. The event started off as a project for the National Honor Society, but its impact will reach far beyond the walls of Lincoln High School.
