The City of Manitowoc is giving away Salt Wise cups to residents. The cups will hold the right amount of salt that should be used to treat about 10 Squares of the sidewalk.
We spread salt to keep our roads and sidewalks safe to travel on during the winter months. That salt doesn’t just go away, it travels into our lakes and streams endangering our freshwater resources. Some places in Wisconsin have chloride from salt infiltrating into our lakes, streams, and groundwater. These increased levels threaten our fisheries, tourism, economy, quality of life, and the health of our waters.
To help protect our freshwater resources, the city is encouraging residents to shovel snow first then use the Salt Wise cup to salt your driveway and sidewalks. When you scatter salt, make sure that there is space between the grains. Cups can be picked up at City Hall at the Clerk’s office or the Engineering office.
