Two Manitowoc residents have been officially charged in the death of a three-year-old child that was in their care this summer. 47-year-old Eduardo Gamez is in the Manitowoc County Jail on a $250 thousand cash bond while 38-year-old Jamie Schrank is being held on $350 thousand cash. Each face a felony charge of Party to a crime-Physical Abuse of a Child, Repeated Acts Causing Death. They also face neglecting a child and drug charges from the incident in which their 5- year-old child also suffered injuries. The child is currently in the care of a family member.
Captain Jason Frieboth of the Manitowoc Police Department says an autopsy performed on the three-year-old child determined the cause of death was complications of blunt force injuries to the abdomen. As a result of the investigation criminal complaints and arrest warrants were completed against both Gamez and Schrank.
On the evening of July 28th MPD Detectives and police officers responded to a local hospital where the three-year-old was suffering from severe internal and external injuries. The child died later that evening. It was determined that both Gamez and Schrank had been using methamphetamines while supervising both children. Conditions of bail include that both defendants have “no contact” with each other and maintain absolute sobriety and Schrank is not to possess any controlled substance. Initial court appearances are scheduled for Monday afternoon at 2:30.
