Manitowoc Mayor Justin Nickels
Mayor Justin Nickels said this week that he’s received numerous comments on facebook about “what’s going on in the city of Manitowoc with a recent spike in crime?” During an appearance Tuesday on WOMT 1240 AM’s morning talk show “Be My Guest”, Nickels spoke primarily about the double-homicide on Dale Street, whose victims were a father and daughter. Nickels says “it’s a legitimate concern…but, we’re NOT Mayberry.”
The mayor added, “when you talk about homicide (cases) and you’re looking for leads it’s best not to publicize that information, or where they are in the process. They are working diligently on this.”
Mayor Nickels expressed his disappointment Tuesday about the factors behind the defeat of TIF District 22 that would’ve included the Meijer Store and other development in Manitowoc’s Southwest side corridor. The city council voted 8-nothing Monday night with two councilmembers absent. The mayor is pleased with happenings downtown involving the Briess Malting expansion and, renovations to the historic Schuette Building.
Nickels added, “(with those developments) next summer is going to be pretty cool downtown.”
