The Northeast Wisconsin (NEW) Manufacturing Alliance will be hosting its 4th annual “Get Real Math Video Premiere” at the Meyer Theatre in Green Bay. Last year’s event had over 200 attendees from 85 different schools. The event debuts the newest installment of the Alliance’s “Get Real Math’ videos. It also marks the kick-off to the state of Wisconsin’s “October is Manufacturing Month.”
Ann Franz, director for the NEW Manufacturing Alliance stated, “The concept of the videos came from a math teacher participating in the Alliance’s K-12 taskforce.” Franz added, “She was needing a tool to show how what she was teaching was used in the real world.” In 2014, five videos were created to answer the questions students often ask, “When am I ever going to use this in the real world?!” The free educational videos include a teacher lesson plan and spotlight real world problems at manufacturing companies. In total, there are now 50 Get Real Math videos created. Companies that will debut the newest videos at the Meyer Theatre include: Fincantieri Marinette Marine, Georgia-Pacific, Kohler Company, TIDI Products, and Werner Electric.
Unlike most movie premieres, it is not the stars of videos that are recognized but educators. At the event, teachers walk down a red carpet and have their pictures taken. There is signage that states that “Educators are the Stars of our Community.” There are numerous prizes given away including $500 cash awards to two math departments and two tech ed departments, and a Miller welding machine.
The Get Real Math Premiere is the first event the Alliance is sponsoring as part of October is Manufacturing month in October. In the month of October, the Alliance is sponsoring the bussing for 100s of students to go on plant tours. October 24, 2018 the Alliance is sponsoring Manufacturing First Expo & Conference at the KI Convention Center. Last year’s event had over 1,000 people attend. This year’s event will have over 200 exhibitors and the keynote speaker is Bob Chapman, CEO of Barry Wehmiller and author of the best-selling book, “Everybody Matters: The Extraordinary Power for Caring for Your People like Family”. The Alliance will also be hosting the 7th annual Excellence in Mfg./K-12 Partnerships Awards dinner at the KI Convention Center on October 23, 2018. This year’s winning schools are Chilton High School, Denmark High School, Green Bay Area Public Schools, Little Chute High School, Southern Door County High School, Wabeno High School and Wautoma High School.
