Four Wisconsin educators including one from Manitowoc County have been named as finalists for the 2018 Presidential Awards for Excellence in mathematics and science. Michelle Butturini a fifth and sixth grade mathematics teacher at Reedsville Elementary/Middle School is one being considered to receive the award that’s considered the highest honor bestowed by the U.S. Government for math and science teachers. Her principal is Mike Nate.
Nate says Butturini—who’s taught more than twenty years in the district—has an “ever growing passion” for her craft.
And that passion is passed on to her students—says Nate—in a unique but very effective manner.
Awardees are deemed to serve as models to their colleagues, inspiration to their communities and leaders in the improvement of STEM education—the acronym for science—technology—engineering and mathematics which includes computer science. Applications will be judged at the national level by a committee organized by the National Science Foundation which administers criteria on behalf of the White House Office of Science and Technology. In addition to recognition and professional development opportunities award recipients receive $10 thousand from the National Science Foundation.
