A siren in the City of Manitowoc malfunctioned early this morning. According to Emergency Services Director, Travis Waack, a severe weather siren located near Stangel Elementary School sounded due to a mechanical failure at around 5:00 AM. There was no emergency requiring siren activation, despite thunderstorms at the time. The Manitowoc County Joint Dispatch Center received several calls from the public regarding the activation and immediately dispatched the City of Manitowoc to turn off the siren and fix the issue. Waack is using this opportunity to reiterate that all citizens are encouraged to have multiple ways to receive weather alerts, including smart phone apps, such as the free Red Cross Emergency App or FEMA App, and a NOAA Weather Radio.
