Wisconsin Public Service is warning their customers that they have noticed an increase in phony phone calls asking for money from WPS customers. Statewide, more than 60 such calls have been reported. The scammers have not only been targeting the residential customers, but also business, with the majority of the action happening in the Wausau and Crivitz areas. One individual did fall for the scam, paying them hundreds of dollars. The scammers tend to use a threatening tone, which WPS is emphasizing that they do don’t conduct their phone calls in such a way. If you receive a call that you believe to be fake, you are encouraged to contact your local police department.
