Big Brothers Big Sisters of Manitowoc County has named Big Brother Terry Stevenson and Little Brother Joe Whatley as its match of the month for July.
Each month, the Big Brothers Big Sisters organization selects a “match” for this recognition. The award is given in honor of the commitment the volunteer and child have made to each other and to the organization in developing a special friendship. This month Terry and Joe are going to be treated to free sandwiches courtesy of Subway.
Terry is no stranger to the Big Brothers Big Sisters program. In fact, he has been connected to the organization since he was five years old and was matched as a “Little” himself. Terry and his “Big”, Joe Matthias, graduated from the BBBS program when Terry turned 18; they were awarded with the longest running match! “Big” Joe and Terry still get together a few times a month, and Terry now also serves as a Big to “Little” Joe and on the Board of Directors at Big Brothers Big Sisters. Professionally, Terry works as the Advertising Sales Manager for Seehafer Broadcasting and recently received the Young Professional of the Year award through the Manitowoc Chamber. Terry has been a Big Brother to Joe Whatley since 2015. Joe is in 7th grade an enjoys football, working out, and riding his four wheeler and dirt bike.
Terry appreciates that he is able to “give back” to the organization as a Big. He really enjoys the relationship that he and Joe have developed and all the memories they have made. Some of their favorite things to do together include playing games, shooting hoops or throwing the football around, and watching movies. They have done a lot of really neat activities together too like attending Brewer games and Packer family night, Timber Rattlers and Green Bay Gambler Games, and going to Six Flags. One of Terry’s favorite memories is recently being able to take Joe to his first concert and meeting TobyMac backstage. The match explained that they mostly just enjoy spending time together though, even if they are just hanging out together. Terry explains, “it’s not always the big stuff that makes our time together memorable…it’s simply being together and having fun.”
Becoming a Big can have such a huge impact on a child’s life. Terry notes that “Big” Joe is part of the reason why he is where he is today. He considers Joe among his dearest friends and mentors, and credits him on helping form many lifelong relationships. Terry is now having that same impact on “Little” Joe, who Terry describes as the most mature and appreciative kid he knows. Joe said that he is more outgoing and less nervous because of their relationship and that Terry is a positive influence on his life.
Terry has felt called to this organization and is clearly helping make a positive impact in the Manitowoc community. “Most kids just want someone to look up to,” Terry explains. “Why not you?”
