Bail was set at $25,000 cash each for two defendants in connection to the death of a 3-year-old child in Manitowoc last weekend. 38- year-old Jamie Schrank of Manitowoc is charged with two felony counts neglecting a child—possession of methamphetamine—party to the crime possession of meth and possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. 46-year-old Eduardo Gamez also of Manitowoc is charged with two felony counts of neglecting a child and party to the crime—possession of methamphetamine. Police were called to a local hospital around 4:45 last Saturday morning for a report of a child being treated for external and internal injuries. The child was transferred to a hospital out of the area and passed away later that evening. An investigation revealed the 3 year old was in the care of the defendants while the parent was at work. It was also discovered they had a five-year-old in common who was also at home at the time and both caretakers had ingested drugs. Manitowoc County Court Commissioner Patricia Koppa says there’s probable cause that Schrank committed these alleged crimes.
Koppa adds Gamez’s criminal record can’t be ignored.
Additional charges are pending based on autopsy results which could take several weeks. The court issued a “contact provision” for them to see their child as allowed and provided by the Department of Human Services. Conditions of bail are that they have no contact with each other or the victim’s family and maintain absolute sobriety from drugs and alcohol. Initial appearances are scheduled for August 13th at 2:30.
