The University of Wisconsin police chief says sexual assault is not treated the same as other violent offenses, like robbery or battery. Chief Kristen Roman released an open letter to sexual assault survivors Thursday saying she is disappointed in the sentence given to a man who pleaded guilty to sexual assault last week. Alec Cook was handed a three-year prison term after entering guilty pleas to five of the 23 charges he faced. Roman says the sentence wasn’t adequate and justice wasn’t served. She also says she is committed to addressing the issue and is in solidarity with sexual assault survivors.
