Steel pilings from a demolished bridge in the Town of Lafayette showed it was even more unstable than was thought. One expert says steel-eating microbes living in Lake Wissota had undermined the supports. The bridge was shut down on Mother’s Day. Demolishing it was complicated by the presence of asbestos and lead paint. A dive team removed the steel pilings from the water Tuesday. Construction on a new bridge starts next summer.
