Due to the recent deaths of famed chef Anthony Bourdain, and fashion designer Kate Spade, the topic of suicide has been on a majority of the country’s mind right now. All this week we will be going over the local statistics, and speaking with some local survivors, and telling their stories. Donna Beath, the Secretary for, Prevent Suicide Wisconsin, Manitowoc Co, told us that as of May 15th, there have been five suicides this year in Manitowoc County alone.
Manitowoc County Veteran Service Director Todd Brehmer told us that the common stat about veteran suicide is no longer accurate.
Beath described the signs that someone may be thinking about hurting themselves, breaking it down into the categories of Talk, Behavior, and Mood.
Todd explained how to address a veteran that is struggling with thoughts of suicide or PTSD.
Todd also told us about resources the Vet Service Office can refer veterans to.
If you or someone you know needs immediate help, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, at 1-800-273-TALK (8255).
