A founding member of The Letterman has passed away.
The group announced that Tony Butala has died, but did not give a cause of death.+
Butala, who had been living in Manitowoc in recent years, began singing professionally at age seven in Sharon, Pennsylvania.
In the late 1950s, he was instrumental in creating the acclaimed artists The Lettermen.
Under his guidance, The Lettermen’s unique 3-part “sound” captivated audiences worldwide. Tony expertly guided the group throughout his career and decided in May of 2019 to step away from the spotlight.
Though his performing days had come to an end, he was instrumental in laying the groundwork for The Lettermen’s legacy to continue under skilled leadership.
Through this legacy, The Lettermen are still performing today, 65 years later.
Per Tony’s wishes, there will be no public viewing. Celebrations of Life will be held in Wisconsin and California, with details to be announced at a later date.
Those who wish to honor Tony’s memory are encouraged to donate to the Lakeshore Humane Society.
