Manitowoc County Emergency Management is reminding people of what to do if they accidentally call 911.
Modern cell phones make it easier than ever to call for emergency services, but that means it is also easier to accidentally call 911.
If you do accidentally call the emergency line, the most important thing is not to hang up.
Instead, explain to the dispatcher that the call was an accident, and the dispatcher will relay that information to the law enforcement officer, who will likely still respond to your location.
Even if you don’t speak with the dispatcher, law enforcement will still be sent to check on you.
Another important thing to note: old cell phones, even ones that are no longer attached to any cellular service, can still call 911.
There have been reports of children playing with deactivated cellphones and accidentally calling 911.
