Manitowoc Lincoln Freshman Ava Wetenkamp has advanced to the Division One quarterfinals of the WIAA Individual Girls State Championships.
She began yesterday (October 15th) by knocking off the 10th seed, senior Milana Halberg of Sun Prairie West 6-4,7-5, and then defeated senior Lauren Filpak of Arrowhead, 7-5 6-0 to advance to the quarterfinals.
Ships Head Coach Paige Cotton tells Seehafer News that Ava’s approach to the game is well beyond her years.
“She did a great job moving her opponents around the court to set them up for winning shots,” she explained. “She is very determined to win every match. Couple that with being blessed with great athletic talent and the desire to compete is very impressive. “
Ava improves to 18 and 3 and faces undefeated and seven-seed Andjela Bovogac, a junior from Greendale High School.
The match is scheduled to begin at 10:45 a.m.
Meanwhile, seniors Ellie Camacho and Julia Jagemann lost to seniors Addison Becker and Mayah Skenadore of Racine Park/Horlick 6-0,6-0 in Division One doubles Thursday.
Coach Cotton said of the duo, “I have coached these girls since they were in middle school and it’s an honor to coach them. They are obviously disappointed with the outcome, but they enjoyed playing the game of tennis and getting the chance to represent Manitowoc Lincoln at state.”
They finish their season with a record of 9-11.
