Four cities in Wisconsin, including Green Bay, have been sued over their collection of data from automatic license plate readers.
NBC26 reports that the ACLU of Wisconsin and the Electronic Frontier Foundation have filed the suit with the Wisconsin Supreme Court, claiming that retroactive searches of data collected through ALPR networks, such as Flock, constitute a search.
Therefore, the suit claims that a warrant should be required. They referred to these networks as a “mass surveillance machine” that tracks residents’ movements, sometimes without their knowledge.
Green Bay, Milwaukee, Racine, and Kenosha are all named in the suit, which was filed on behalf of the Wisconsin Council of Churches and a Green Bay pastor.
