Charges have been filed against a man in the U.S. illegally who injured a woman while driving in Fond du Lac.
Fond du Lac County District Attorney Eric J. Toney announced that the charges stem from an incident where Elmer Jose Cardona Bustillo was driving with a suspended license and hit a 50-year-old woman with Down Syndrome.
The woman was said to be walking in the crosswalk, but Cardona Bustillo claimed that due to it being dark at the time and that she was wearing dark clothing, he couldn’t see her.
The woman was airlifted to a hospital in Milwaukee with life-threatening injuries.
Cardona Bustillo made his initial appearance in court on Wednesday, where he was charged with Knowingly Operating a Motor Vehicle While Suspended – Causing Great Bodily Harm.
It was also learned that he had been ordered to be deported in November of 2015.
His bail was set at $25,000, and an ICE detainer is expected in the near future.
Cardona Bustillo is due back in court on October 23rd for a preliminary hearing.
