A local golfer fared very well at the state girls’ golf meet.
Junior Callaway Goodman of Kiel High School made history Monday morning when she teed off at the WIAA State girls’ golf tournament, becoming the first golfer in history to represent KHS.
Callaway placed eighth in the Division Two field, shooting a two-day total of 169 (85-84) at University Ridge in Verona.
Coach Kelly Gozdziewski tells SeehaferNews.com that she couldn’t be prouder of Callaway’s performance on the game’s biggest stage.
“She played amazing golf,” she put it bluntly. “We jokingly called her ‘Consistent Cal’. She always responded with a great score after some tough luck on previous holes. She shot lights-out amazing in my eyes.”
Gozdziewski says Callaway stayed within herself and played to her strengths to stay within the top of the leaderboard all 36 holes.
“She shot 100 go 150 yards less than the golfers in her group, but when it came to her short game (chipping and putting), she blew them all out of the water,” Gozdziewski revelead.
The Kiel Head Coach says that the talented junior golfer matured not only physically, but especially mentally by being more open to coaching and instruction than at any time in her career.
“She is the leader you want on your team to show them what it takes to get to state,” she said. “Callaway was just so much fun to work with this season.”
Goodman had plenty of support as all her teammates and many community members were there to cheer her on.
Gozdziewski adds that they’ve accomplished a lot in just three short years as a program, adding that the sky is the limit for the future of girls’ golf at Kiel High School.
“I can look back and say, ‘Wow, we did it,” she said. “Callaway was the one who continually and consistently pushed to get this program up and running. She showed everyone how important golf is to her and the Kiel community.”
