Jury selection in the trial of Timothy Hauschultz is continuing for the rest of the day.
Just before their noon lunch break, prosecutors and the defense selected seven jurors, but dismissed 13 for numerous reasons, including their knowledge of the case, a bias against harming children, and not being able to keep away from the news.
Once the jury is selected, prosecutors and the defense will give opening statements before prosecutors call their first person to testify in the case.
Prosecutors and the defense also argued with Calumet County Judge Carey Reed over questions of who could testify during his case.
Timothy faces charges including neglecting a child and causing death after his 7-year-old great-nephew Ethan died while being forced to carry a heavy log for not knowing Bible verses.
Damian Hauschultz carried out the punishment, but according to prosecutors, Timothy asked for it to happen.
Ethan was hit and poked over 100 times before he was buried in the snow and later died at a hospital.
Damian is serving a 20-year prison sentence, while Timothy’s trial has been waiting for 8 years to start because of appeals by Damian after he was found guilty due to a no contest plea for 1st-degree reckless homicide.
