The Milwaukee Sheriff’s Deputies Union is backing calls to suspend inmate tablet messaging across county correctional facilities following safety concerns.
Democratic candidate for governor and County Executive David Crowley has already ordered the service halted at one facility after reports that inmates used tablets to threaten victims.
While union leaders support suspending the program, they warn that removing messaging without a backup plan could spark jail disturbances.
The union notes that the devices do help manage inmates during daily lockdowns caused by severe staffing shortages.
