The former Manitowoc teacher accused of grooming a student has entered her plea.
32-year-old Courtney Haupt was before Judge Mark Rohrer yesterday (October 8th), where she had her attorney, Andrew Joseph Krajnek, waive her right to a preliminary hearing.
This is done to force the prosecution to prove probable cause, which, according to Nolo.com, is a move that aims to get the charges dismissed.
This tracks with what came next, as the case moved to an arraignment.
The court did find probable cause, and Haupt pleaded not guilty to charges of Grooming a Child for Sexual Activity and Sexual Misconduct by School Staff or Volunteer.
Haupt, who was employed as a Special Education Paraprofessional, allegedly made unwanted sexual advances both verbally and via text to the student, who then told his parents.
She has posted bail and was ordered to not have contact anyone between 12 and 17 years old unless it is her own family, and she is not allowed to have an internet-enabled device.
Haupt is due back in court for further proceedings on November 20th.
