The City of Two Rivers is reminding residents of a change that will take place at the end of the month.
The City will stop adding fluoride to its water on November 1st, after the City Council voted to approve the change on September 8th.
Fluoride is a mineral that helps strengthen tooth enamel and prevent cavities, but many people have raised concerns about it being added to drinking water.
In Two Rivers, the main citizen concern revolved around bodily autonomy, with Councilman Adam Wachowski arguing in the lead-up to the vote, “With putting fluoride in the water, we aren’t making a choice whether or not we want to ingest fluoride or not. We are being forced.”
Those in favor of keeping it in voiced concerns about how less fortunate families were going to ensure their children were going to get their fluoride.
The City of Two Rivers has announced that, beginning on November 1st, free fluoride toothpaste will be provided at City Hall during normal business hours, and the public health vending machine at the Fire Department will be stocked with fluoride toothpaste tablets.
City staff is also working to bring Seal-A-Smile preventative dental services to schools in the Cool City, but it is unclear when that program would be implemented.
