The City of Two Rivers appears to be extending its contract with its non-profit public power provider.
The city council voted 6-2 to move the plan forward on Monday.
The city would extend its contract with WPPI Energy, which ends in 2055, to 2073.
If the city decided not to extend its contract, it would give up its guaranteed right to continue purchasing power from WPPI after 2055, and the power supplier would take Cool City out of its system.
WPPI Energy CEO Mike Peters says the extension would preserve blended wholesale rates for the energy they provide, member equity, and support long-term resource planning.
There are also multiple projects that are coming for the areas they serve, meaning rates will be going up everywhere.
Councilmember Katherine Dahlke asked about the group’s diversified portfolio and its work with the American Transmission Company (ATC), while Councilmember Adam Wachowski raised concerns about some of the projects they supply power for.
WPPI is hoping to see all municipalities they help serve get a contract extension done by February next year.
So far, 29 members have extended their contract.
